A car repair, a surprise bill or a gap in income can hit at any time. An emergency fund is money set aside only for those moments.

What it is and isn't

It's easily accessible savings for real emergencies. It isn't for vacations, treats or investing: its job is security, not returns.

How much do you need?

A common guideline is 3 to 6 months of essential expenses. If your income varies or you support others, aim for 6 months or more. If that feels out of reach, start with one month.

Where to keep it

  • It should be quick to access with no risk of losing principal.
  • A separate savings account often works well.
  • Avoid volatile assets such as crypto: prices can drop exactly when you need the money.

How to build it

  1. Work out your essential monthly costs from your budget.
  2. Set a goal and a realistic monthly amount.
  3. Automate a transfer on payday.
  4. Refill the fund whenever you use it.
